How I Lost the Curtains and Gained a Landmark? The secret story behind Britain's famous Stonehenge.

I should have known better. A man doesn’t climb the ranks of barristers or own racehorses without a touch of common sense, but apparently, mine decided to take the day off. Yes, I am not afraid to admit that I am an impulsive fool. As I sat in our drawing room, clutching a newspaper as though it might shield me, my dear wife, Mrs. Chubb, loomed over me like an emerald-clad judge. She was a vision, yes, but at this moment, she was more “executioner” than “dream.”

“Cecil,” she began, her voice sweetly dangerous, like honey laced with arsenic. “Where. Are. The. Curtains?”

Ah, the curtains. Damask. Plum. Sophisticated. She had been very specific. And here I was, a grown man, bracing for the verbal hurricane about to hit.

“It’s funny you should ask…” I started, hoping humor might deflect the inevitable. Her eyebrow shot up. Not a good sign.

“Funny?” she said, her tone sharpening. “Do tell, Cecil. How exactly is the absence of my plum curtains amusing?”

I could feel beads of sweat forming. “Well, my love, it’s a rather unusual story…”

She folded her arms, emerald dress shimmering ominously in the firelight. This was not going to be easy.

It all began with an innocent enough errand. She wanted curtains. I agreed to fetch them. Simple. Foolproof. And then, I made the fatal error of stopping at the auction house.

In my defense, the auctioneer was a showman of the highest order. His voice boomed through the

room, each word painting vivid pictures of grandeur and importance. I had no intention of buying anything. Really, I didn’t. But then he said it: “Lot 15—Stonehenge - A unique piece of British History.”

The room went quiet, and my heart, dear reader, skipped a beat. Stonehenge? THE Stonehenge?

I sat forward in my chair as the auctioneer waxed lyrical about heritage, history, and patriotism. My blood boiled. Rumors in the papers spoke of Americans—brash, nouveau riche Americans—snatching up British treasures like souvenirs from a gift shop. Imagine Stonehenge, our Stonehenge, turned into some sideshow spectacle across the Atlantic. Unthinkable!

Before I knew it, my arm shot up. “Six thousand pounds!” I blurted, surprising even myself. A gasp rippled through the room.

The auctioneer grinned, hammer in hand. “Going once… going twice… SOLD! To the gentleman with a clear sense of national duty!”

The hammer fell. The room erupted into applause. I, Cecil Chubb, had just bought Stonehenge. For the first ten seconds, I felt like a hero. For the next ten, I felt like an idiot. Curtains? What curtains?

“So,” Mrs. Chubb said, her tone frigid enough to chill my tea. “You mean to tell me that instead of curtains, you bought a… landmark?”

I swallowed hard. “Not just any landmark, my dear. It’s iconic. Timeless. British.”

Her eyes narrowed. “Can I hang plum curtains on it?”

“Well… not exactly.”

“Then what, pray tell, am I supposed to do with it?”

Good question. I had no answer. “Think of it as… an investment?” I ventured weakly.

Her laughter was as unexpected as it was alarming. It wasn’t the light, musical sound of joy but the
kind of laughter one hears before a villain reveals their dastardly plan. “Cecil Chubb,” she said, shaking her head. “You truly are incorrigible. Where is it?”

The drive to Wiltshire was long and silent. Mrs. Chubb had insisted on seeing “this Stonehenge” for herself, and I, resigned to my fate, drove like a man headed to the gallows.

When we arrived, the sight of the ancient stones took my breath away. The way they stood against the rolling hills of Salisbury Plain—majestic, mysterious, utterly British. I turned to gauge Mrs. Chubb’s reaction, bracing for impact.

She stepped out of the car, her face an unreadable mask. Then, to my utter shock, she began to laugh. Properly laugh, this time.

“Oh, Cecil,” she said between giggles. “You absolute fool. You bought this? You actually bought Stonehenge?”

I scratched my head. “Well… yes.”

She doubled over, laughing so hard tears streamed down her cheeks. It was infectious. I found myself chuckling too, more out of relief than amusement. The absurdity of it all was undeniable.

Of course, the laughter didn’t last long. Reality hit like a lead weight. Stonehenge, it turns out, is not the most practical of purchases. The maintenance alone was enough to make my head spin. And then there was the question of what to do with it.

“You could charge admission,” Mrs. Chubb suggested one evening. “If you’re going to own a prehistoric monument, you might as well make it pay for itself.”

It was a sound idea, but charging people to see a piece of their own heritage felt… wrong. I couldn’t bring myself to do it. I hadn’t bought Stonehenge to profit; I’d bought it to protect it from landing in the hands of some rich uncouth American from across the pond.

For three years, I bore the weight of my impulsive decision. The newspapers had a field day, dubbing me “the man who bought Stonehenge.” Friends alternated between congratulating me and questioning my sanity. Mrs. Chubb, to her credit, stood by me, though she never missed an opportunity to remind me of the plum curtains.

Then, on October 26, 1918, I made a decision that surprised even myself. I donated Stonehenge to the British government. No fanfare, no demands—just a simple gesture to ensure that this ancient monument would remain in British hands forever. Public access guaranteed forever.

When I broke the news to Mrs. Chubb, she sighed, a mix of exasperation and amusement. “Well,” she said, “at least you’ve ensured no brash American will claim it. But next time, Cecil, stick to curtains.”

And that, dear reader, is the tale of how I became the accidental steward of Stonehenge. It remains a source of mild embarrassment, an occasional topic of dinner-party banter, and a constant reminder of the perils of impulsive bidding. Mrs. Chubb got her plum curtains in the end, of course. As for me? I got a unique place in history—and a firm promise to never, ever stray from the shopping list again.

Cecil & Mary Chubb

Note: This is a fictional retelling from my perspective on a story I  read about the history of  Stonehenge many years back. Cecil Chubb is credited for saving Stonehenge and ensuring it costs a shilling to visit forever. In return for his generosity, he was conferred with a knighthood

The Political Paw-spective

Meet Max and Bella, two lovable Labrador Retrievers living in the lively home of Raj and Priya Misra. Max, with his golden coat, is the older of the two, and he often takes it upon himself to be the voice of reason. Bella, a chocolate Labrador, is more energetic and curious, constantly trying to make sense of the chaos around her.

Their human parents, Raj and Priya, are devoted political enthusiasts, but they couldn’t be more different in their political views. Raj is a die-hard supporter of Narendra Modi and the BJP, while Priya is a passionate advocate for Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party. This difference of opinion often leads to spirited debates, especially when the news is on.

One evening, Max and Bella were lounging in the living room, their favorite spot. Raj and Priya were settled on the couch, ready for their nightly dose of news and political analysis.

The Evening Commotion

As soon as the news anchor started discussing the upcoming elections, Max’s ears perked up. He knew what was coming. Sure enough, Raj leaned forward, his eyes lighting up with excitement. "Did you hear that, Priya? Another massive rally for Modi! The man is unstoppable!"

Priya rolled her eyes and shot back, "Oh please, Raj. Modi’s rallies are all show and no substance. Did you see Rahul’s interview today? He spoke with such clarity and vision!"

Max nudged Bella with his nose. “Here we go again. Why do they get so worked up about these humans on the screen?”

Bella tilted her head, her ears flopping to one side. “I don’t get it either, Max. Why can’t they just agree? Or at least fetch a stick together like we do?”

Max sighed. “Humans are strange creatures, Bella. They have this thing called politics, and it seems to make them bark louder than we do at the Zomato delivery guys.”

The Great Debate

As the news segment continued, the debate between Raj and Priya grew more animated. Raj waved his hand dismissively. “Rahul Gandhi couldn’t lead a parade, let alone a country! Modi has transformed India with his decisive leadership.”

Priya scoffed. “Decisive leadership? More like divisive leadership. Modi’s policies are tearing the country apart. Rahul understands the importance of unity and diversity.”

Max lay down, resting his head on his paws. “You’d think they were talking about something important, like food or belly rubs.”

Bella wagged her tail, trying to lighten the mood. “Maybe we should distract them with our cute faces. It always works when they’re upset.” Max chuckled. “Good idea. Let’s go.”

The Paw-some Distraction

Max and Bella trotted over to the couch, wagging their tails furiously. They nuzzled their noses into Raj and Priya’s laps, hoping to divert their attention. For a moment, it worked. Priya scratched Bella behind

the ears, and Raj gave Max a good belly rub.

But the truce was short-lived. The news anchor moved on to a heated debate between political analysts, and Raj and Priya’s attention snapped back to the TV. “See, even the experts agree!” Raj exclaimed. “Modi is the best choice for India’s future.”

Priya threw up her hands. “Experts? Those pundits are biased! They wouldn’t recognize good governance if it bit them on the nose.”

Max looked at Bella with a resigned expression. “It’s no use. They’re too far gone.”
Bella sighed. “I guess we’ll just have to wait it out. But why do they care so much about these people they’ve never even met?”

A Canine Reflection

Max pondered for a moment. “I think it’s because they both want what’s best for the pack, er, country. They just have different ideas about how to get there.”

Bella nodded thoughtfully. “That makes sense. Kind of like how you and I both love treats, but you prefer biscuits and I prefer bones.”

Max smiled. “Exactly. Different preferences, same goal.”

As the night wore on, Raj and Priya’s argument gradually lost its intensity. They were both passionate, but deep down, they knew their love for each other was stronger than any political disagreement.

The Peace Treaty

Eventually, Priya sighed and turned to Raj with a weary smile. “You know, Raj, we’ll never agree on politics. But that’s okay. We can still respect each other’s views.”

Raj nodded, taking her hand. “You’re right, Priya. Let’s agree to disagree and focus on what really matters – us, and our family.”

Max and Bella exchanged a satisfied look. Their human parents might be hopelessly divided on politics, but their bond was unbreakable.

The Final Bark

As Raj and Priya cuddled on the couch, watching a non-political comedy show, Max turned to Bella. “You see, Bella, humans may not always make sense, but they do know how to love. And that’s what keeps everything together.”

Bella yawned and snuggled closer to Max. “You’re right, Max. As long as they’re happy, that’s all that matters.”

And so, in the home of Raj and Priya Misra, the political battles continued, but love and loyalty always won in the end – much to the relief of two very wise dogs.

As the night grew quieter, Max reflected on the day's events. “Bella, do you think they’ll ever agree on anything?” Bella stretched and rolled onto her back. “Maybe not on politics, but they agree on us, and that’s what really counts.

With that, Max and Bella drifted off to sleep, dreaming of a world where humans could fetch sticks and chase squirrels together, regardless of their political stripes. And in their dreams, the world was a much happier place – for dogs and humans alike.

Kopimism - A religion now for Ctrl C + Ctrl V

A new religion has come up...where else but in the Scandinavian country of Sweden....I tell you those scandinavians are noveltys....they are marvels on this planet.....they are one of the richest nations in the world...and have some of the quirkiest laws in the world....
Anyways...quirks of Sweden later...more about the new religion....
The government of Sweden has finally recognized a new file-sharing religion Kopimism...You heard it right .....File-Sharing religion Kopimism........
A "church" whose central tenet is the right to file-share has been formally recognised by the Swedish government. The Church of Kopimism claims that "kopyacting" - sharing information through copying - is akin to a religious service.
The church, which holds CTRL+C and CTRL+V (shortcuts for copy and paste) as sacred symbols, does not directly promote illegal file sharing, focusing instead on the open distribution of knowledge to all.
It was founded by 19-year-old philosophy student and leader Isak Gerson. He hopes that file-sharing will now be given religious protection.
Oh.....by the way the followers of this religion will be callled "Kopimi".... what an ingenious name :)
God, help the fight against piracy now what with file sharing becoming a religion now.....Not that I am complaining....as I am waiting for the latest blockbuster movies torrent to finish downloading in my laptop.... :) :)
I promised you some quirky facts about Sweden.....here you go:
    • As of 2004 you can pay your Swedish taxes by sending an SMS message from your cell phone.
    • Taxes are generally between 50 and 70% of your income. (Of course your employer already pays the full amount of your salary to the government in taxes before you even get anything.)
    • Companies must lay off employees in first-in-last-out order when they are downsizing.
    • All employees (including graduate students) get 5 weeks of paid vacation a year.

    • The transportation department of the Swedish government works actively to reduce the number of traffic deaths each year to zero. (Mainly by reducing the speed limits.)

    • There is no right turn on red.

    • Any product you purchase is guaranteed for 1 year, and the retailer must exchange it if it fails in that time. (This includes things like clothes and shoes.)

    • All non-military property that is not fenced in, or is not a farm or someone's personal garden is open to anyone for hiking through or camping for one night.

    • Roughly 20% of the country's police stations close during the summer since everyone is off on vacation.

    • Swedish university students are required to pay a membership fee in the student union, but no tuition.

What Options Do We Have???

Again there was a bomb blast in the seat of power in India some days back. Again some stats were updated....X number of people died and Y number of people got injured. The government appeared as clueless as always. Sweeping statements were made by our adorable politicians. Finger pointing started within half an hour of the news being flashed in news channels......... Something else  happened this time which caught my eye, family members of some of the injured heckled our adorable politicians when they decided to play a visit to the injured ones and show their heartfelt genuine concern to them....It caught my eye, precisely for one reason, people were getting pissed off with the sweeping statements made....It was the proverbial example of tall talks and short work of our adorable Indian Politicians....

As the day progressed, the stats kept on fluctuating with it being X+1 people dying....and Y+1 getting injured...As always opposition started baying for the ruling governments blood...That night, I was not able to sleep (I am an insomniac) and was thinking what all can we Indians do to stop these cowardly acts....Bingo...I got my answer (I am intelligent ;-))in a minute....We need to vote this government out and elect a new stronger one...One which will at least show some spine....make some newer statements instead of the same stale ones, like "We will ultimately win this war against terrorism" and if they do find their guts...then act against the perpetrators of these terrorist acts.....

Well what options we have....Anyone who has any remote knowledge of Indian Politics, would  know...that India has like a million, billion, trillion, gazellion different political parties....I mean parties are created...in the blink of an eye in India.....We have political parties catering to every taste, size, color, creed, cast, region, state, brand of under wear and God knows how many more options.....But primarily all of these political parties can be classified into three broad categories:
  • Congress(I) + allies
  • BJP + allies
  • Third Front = All allies
You are all Eienstiens......so I guess ..you would have figured out....the common factor above is of course Allies :)
What are allies?? Allies are the fair weather friends...who jump a bandwagon at the drop of a heart....If you have been reading my post above...then these are the gazellion political parties...I had talked about.....Each of them think they are King Makers....even if they represent one sex of a sub-sub...caste of a sub-caste of a caste in their constituency of 1000 people.....

So what options we have...if we do vote out the Congress (I) + Allies and do elect a new government....

Congress + Allies

Confused.....because I had just said what are our alternatives if we vote out the incumbent government led by Congress and its allies......What do you expect...despite the numerous scams tainting the government, the 80 year old leading PM contenders, a not so young Rahul Baba who is yet to leave any significant mark in politics..in all probability they would still be voted back into the seat.....We Indians...we are fools...we know it.....but lets see what happens....

  1. We will have some 80 year old as our PM (as Rahul Baba will be too busy suckling on to Mummy ji)
  2. Bombs will continue to return to haunt us...just like monsoons each year....
  3. The PM and his cronies will still declare...."We WILL win this war on terrorism"
  4. Terrorists will be the happiest folks as they know...nothings gonna be done by the Indian government
  5. We will continue to make ourselves fools
  6. We will continue to appear as the weakest nation in the world.....just ahead of Guinea Bissau and Burkina Faso
  7. We will continue to act as the weak nation we are ....just ahead of Guinea Bissau and Burkina Faso
  8. Twenty three new development projects will be inaugurated for the up-liftment of the poor
  9. These development projects will be named after everyone in the Gandhi family....including the still un born children of Rahul Baba
  10. No development will still be achieved.....
  11. Scams....why am I talking about it.....they will happen...after all that's one thing our adorable politicians are good at....
BJP + Allies:

The second alternative we would have.....yes, Bharatia Janata Party and its bunch of allies...Lets see what will happen if this scenario becomes a reality
  1. Boooooooom!!!! You heard it...you will get to hear the largest bang possible...........Yes..India would do a Pokran III...
  2. Newspapers headlines will be full of bravado......
  3. Followed quickly by Pakistan......Status Quo will be maintained after Pakistan does its own nuclear bomb test.....
  4. India might...just might get into a fire fight with Pakistan terrorists....
  5. Terrorists will hit back with a vengeance...and more common people will die even as our adorable politicians garner Z+2-1*3 security for themselves
  6. Infrastructure projects already approved by the previous incumbent government will be renamed as Chatrapati Shivaji/ Veer Savarkar XYZ development projects
  7. Even after renaming no development will be achieved
  8. Witch hunting....oh!! the favorite sport of our adorable politicians will be played with a vengeance ...every Congress  and its allies politician will be proved to be embroiled in some scam or the other
  9. No congress or its allies politician will still go to jail.
  10. Scams....why am I talking about it.....they will happen...after all that's one thing our adorable politicians are good at....
Third Front = All Allies:

Hmm!!! Seems unlikely....but "yeh India hai...yahan par sab kuch ho saktha hai".....They are actually the essence of India....."JUGAAD"...You heard it....its a quintessential example of JUGAAD.....A rag a tag collection of parties coming together....to form a government.....Lets see what will happen if such a reality does dawn upon us......
  1. There will be 29 parties in the coalition government and 32 contenders for just the post of the PM
  2. There will be at the least 64 Cabinet Minister and 128 Ministers of State (see the exponential rise)
  3. There will be another 256 ministers...without any portfolio...but never the less ministers
  4. There will be 8 Prime Ministers within the span of 5 years...i.e if they pull it that long
  5. Terrorists will have a gala of a time.....because our defense forces will be out of bullets....as the ministry of defense and ministry of commerce will be fighting over in whose constituency the ordinance factory should be opened
  6. Each time a deadly terrorist attack  would occur...there will be finger pointing between Ministry of Rural Development and Ministry of Tribal Affairs....both the ministers belonging to different parties....
  7. Government will forget to point fingers to the terrorists with all the internal squabbling
  8. The 256 ministers without portfolio will be in permanent world trips....learning about ways to reduce flatulence/increase gobar gas capacity/exotic locations for new Bollywood movies.....
  9. The Jugadus will announce 175 new populist development projects
  10. These deveopment projects will be named after neutrals and some unknown political entities like Seth Chunna Mal/Lovely Singh/Seth Koyla Mal
  11. No development will still occur
  12. Scams....why am I talking about it.....they will happen...after all that's one thing our adorable politicians are good at....or its allies  politician ...however will be prosecuted
Man...I know...all of you are probably gonna think...I am pessimist...I mean I did not write a single word of appreciation for any of the political parties.....I lampooned all of them.....h ah ah ha ha ha

Nonetheless this is the current scenario of our politics.....

PS: If I get arrested by the government after writing this...please get in touch with Anna Hazare...so that an agitation movement can be launched to grant me freedom ;-)

Embarrassment & Stuck Zipper

Wifey gone on business trip to US and the initial euphoria of returned bachelorhood gone...life is pretty drab these days....except for one interesting thing which happened recently.

I live in a noveu rich locality with several gated society buildings all around. Somewhere very near to this place is a building which acts as hostel for foreign exchange students mostly from sub -saharan Africa or south east Asia occasionally a Brit or American can be seen also....

There is one department store near our place and everyone comes over here for purchasing daily needs. I being a lazy dumb ass, walked into  the department store in my shorts and Tee one fine Sunday morning to get a pack of mother cow's juices.....

Normally, I care a damn for low fat/skimmed/toned/double toned/quadra zillion million toned milk.....seriously its too damn confusing....for me as long as its white and liquid...its milk.

I picked on a carton of milk and was just coming out of the aisle when I nearly collided with a rather well-dressed, well endowed, tall, slim British-ish woman in a comely lavender dress.

Comprehensive eye make-up was spotted. I am no expert, but I think it was a one-shoulder floor-length dress with a slanted empire waist. Classy indeed.

Unfortunately my milk carton had fallen down and the British-ish lady picked it up for me. “There you go,” she said, handing over the milk carton.

I barely managed a Thank U.........I was using small words because I was holding my stomach in.

She turned around and was about to walk away, when she turned back and said if I could help for a second.

“O… K…” I said struggling due to lack of oxygen.

I am not making the rest up.

“Can you zip me up please. I think it is stuck.” She looked tremendously embarassed

But my embarrassment was making her embarrassment look like an amateurish embarrassment who practised being embarrassed only for occasional office embarrassment tournaments.

I noticed, the offending zipper was a tiny one stuck halfway between her waist and her under-arm, leaving a few inches of her dress open on the side.

I sheepishly pulled up the zipper a couple of times. Nothing happened. And then I held the dress and she pulled the zipper.

Nothing.

Then I pulled down on the zipper in order to do the old “rezip with momentum” trick. Which is when I realised that the zipper went all the way down.

At this point of time my embarrassment would have probably made George Bush Jr.'s embarrassment at not finding WMD with Saddam look puny....

kept at it for another 5 mins. The bloody thing would run smoothly to a apoint and then simply get stuck.

Eventually we realized that our relationship was going nowhere.

"Maybe I should go find a woman to help me…” she said, opening a whole new can of mental worms.

“I am sorry I am so bad at this…” I said.

And then we parted on amicable terms. I turned around and ran out of the store clutching my milk carton and gasping for air.

Moral of the Story -  Should have been a little thinner so that I could hold my breath for some more time :)

Hospitals and Fantasies

Before you begin..lemme confess this is an A rated story...so read on at your own discretion..... :)

Hospitals and Fantasies.....might sound strange but to me they sound perfectly normal...lolz.....Hospitals scare the shit out of me.... I had my fair share of Hospital visits during my 20 something years of life.....but never for myself.....no wait..i had been once for a surgery as a kid...but thats another blog post....I had had many visits to the hospital, courtesy ailing grandparents and cousins of the extended family producing babies at the rate which was scary.....but that was all... I had never myself slept on a hospital bed....nor had I been checked upon by a doctor ever...apart from Dad...My Dad was the marvel of the family....the only doctor among 5 other siblings all of whom turned out to be engineers.... Dad being a marvel...meant he was the family Dentist/Obstetrician/Surgeon/Pathologist/Neuro Surgeon/Dermatologist/Psychiatrist/Urologist/Oncologist/Gastroentrologist.....but primarily a Dentist. He was the all in all doctor for the whole family.....while teeth were his forte, he could dish out advice for any ailment under the sun...from cures to pimples for cousins in line for marriage to aunties having stomachaches to be confirmed later as yet another case of pregnancy.....lolz

Last year, I moved to Chennai and after the relative gorging on Chicken the favorite non-veg of north India, I got a chance to gorge myself on sea food in South India. Gorge I did....a little too much I guess.... I suffered from a viral/bacterial/fungal infection (Doctors couldn’t pinpoint it)....which soon threatened to become life threatening....When fevers of 105.....did not subside for 3 days.....I had to be admitted to a Hospital.....Hospital!!! I got the heebi jeebies when I learnt from wifey that she was taking me there......I was too weak to say no and became unconscious....I woke up when the damn doctor stabbed my arm with a syringe.....Damn you doctors and damn your weapons of choice...the bloody syringes.....I mean the soldiers and come to think of it even the terrorists are better off death masters....they have impressive weaponry to boast off and you can at least see your death approaching with AK 47’s, Beretta’s, Bazooka’s, Grenades, Rocket Launchers....but doctors with their tiny syringes...Nah!! Never!!! Not!!!

I had to be there for over 7 days.....but the damn syringes, the bloody blood/platelet transfusion and the colorless IV fluids did start to take effect and my fever subsided.....Hospitals are  places of miracles and their halls are frequented by Gods who snatch life from the jaws of death everyday.....but nevertheless they also form the background for many a child's fantasy.....Yeah! U heard me right....erotic fantasy.....lolz......Don't fret and start passing judgements on me.....I mean come'on where else do you get to see girls....wearing short skirts in India....and especially in a more conservative place like Orissa......Thank God...Dad was a doctor and that meant I got more opportunities to go to hospitals....lolz.....But in my case the hospital being in Chennai.....none of the nurses were the pretty girls I had been dreaming off....Of course....my libido was working fine...for God's sake....I was unwel...but my loins still stirred ;-) but alas!!!! my fantasies of frolicking with nurses was going to remain a fantasy...lolz...

PS: The day wifey reads this line...she's gonna kill me.....because when I myself had started thinking about heavens and the apsaras and angels...she was the one who stood beside me steadfastly, took care of me and brought me back on my feet.....

Do post your comments over here....if you like the post :)
